Henry Wolf shot this striking photograph of pencils arranged with botanical precision for Cornell University in 1978. The design was credited to Dru De Santis. Students entering the First International Competition of Outstanding Student Work in Architecture Graphics were instructed:

All students currently enrolled in Landscape Architecture programs are eligible. Work must have been completed during the academic year… Judging will be based on creativity in graphic technique, development of individual style, communication of ideas, professional appearance. Emphasis is on graphics not technical data.

Categories were plan drawing, section/elevation drawing, perspective sketches, model photography, and functional diagram. First place winners won $200 (multiply by three or so for today).
