First Look: Louise Fili

Next up in our newly-hatched Design Study Collection: the supremely elegant Louise Fili. Fili’s design studio, Louise Fili Ltd., specializes in logo, package, and restaurant design. Her packaging (for products from Sarabeth’s, American Spoon, and Qbel chocolates, among many others) can been seen in the gourmet food stores I love to frequent. Fili’s corporate identity work includes logos for Hyperion, Ecco Press, and a redesign of the venerable Good Housekeeping Seal.

Fili worked for Herb Lubalin from 1976-1978 and then became art director of Pantheon Books from 1978-1989. During her tenure at Pantheon she was responsible for two-thousand book jackets, leaving a profound mark on book jacket design in the process. Fili is also a faculty member in SVA’s BFA Graphic Design program and its MFA Designer as Author Program and has authored or co-authored many books on design and typography.

The Louise Fili Collection includes wine label designs for Polaner wine importer and a series of lovely limited edition letterpress books representing Fili’s finest logos and packaging designs.
