A photograph by Duane Michals in the Henry Wolf art-directed Show captured the classical and modern spirit of George Balanchine. Show, like Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire, was an expression of Wolf’s editorial design-defining ability to merge type and image, but was even more lush and adventurous. The delicate text in the upper right corner, “George Balanchine’s world is bounded by,” runs off a dancer’s pointe shoe and hints at Balanchine’s expansive vision of ballet.
