Push Pin & Pop

By: zacharysachs

Though the style of Seymour Chwast and Push Pin Studios — omnivorous reference, expressive illustration, collage — developed prior to the fine art of Andy Warhol, they would at times overlap. (Warhol’s early commercial illustration and later, spectacular color sense, suggests he might have made an interesting, if perhaps impractical, addition to firm.) This pencil box designed by Chwast has the posterized coloration and messy repetition that recalls Andy’s Green Coca-Cola Bottles or Knives. A box for flowers bridges Warhol’s illustration and his famous series of flower paintings:

A white pencil box containing a rolled sheet of a paper, displaying a rose bouquet print. The box interior is layered with green wrapping paper.
