A note from the designer: Traditionally, a manual was the tool for implementing corporate identification programs. However, experience showed that elaborate manuals took too long to produce, were prohibitive in cost, were difficult to keep current, and most seriously, rarely consulted.
To alleviate this problem, we produced corporate identification "samplers" for the Millipore Corp. which could be distributed generously because of their low unit-cost, and could be posted in company art departments and outside suppliers for quick and constant reference.
All this changed with the advent of the computer which encompassed all these production tools and made them easily accessible. Furthermore, rigid adherence to dogmatic rules and regulations softened and opened up more creative interpretations by the individual designer. - ID
