In 1964, SVA’s Visual Arts Gallery hosted the Bettman Panopticon, an exhibition of works by the leading art directors and designers of the day created from materials in the Bettmann Archive, the trove of vintage clip art and photos.
Organized by Peter Max and Tom Daly, the exhibition traveled to multiple locations, finally landing at SVA (not surprising, considering the number of artists with ties to the College: Everett Aison, Dave Epstein, Jack Beck, Ivan Chermayeff, Cris Gianakos, Jerry Moriarty, Robert Weaver, Barbara Nessim, Tony Palladino, and Henry Wolf, among others). Steve Heller wrote about the exhibition in Print but I also recently came across additional documentation, including the invitation to the exhibition at SVA and installation photos from the Bettmann Archive.
